Taquile
Taquile is an elongated island 5.4km long
with a maximum width of 1.3km, with a high point 264m above
lake Titicaca (3810masl). In the folds of mount (Apu) Molusina
the main town is located with its plaza, church, arts and
crafts centre and municipal and government buildings.
The
island is considered important as the community is well organized
for tourism and dedicates itself to agriculture fishery and
knitwear production. This is complemented by archeological
sites and sacred sites such as Koanos and Molusina (long-forgotten
ceremonial centres). The island enjoys a privileged mid-lake
location and offers beautiful and paradisiacal scenery.
On the South side of the island near the
ceremonial site of Koanos there are ceremonial terraces and
a beautiful beach, an accessible yet little-visited location.
Amantani
Amantani is situated East of the Capachica
peninsula and North of Taquile, some 40km from the port of
Puno. Larger than Taquile, its highest point is Llacasti Pata
(4130masl), also called Pacha Mama. Here there is an octagonal
stone temple from the Pukara era that nearly forms a circle
13m in diameter. The interior is concave or sunken by uneven
circles and has a chamber to keep offerings. A second temple
is found at Koanos, or Pacha Tata , whose height is some 15m
less.
Amantani's
population dedicates itself to agriculture, growing potato,
oca (local tuber), barley and broad beans. They also keep
sheep and some cattle. Fishing is also part of their daily
world.
Something quite amazing is the cultivation
of corn or maize on this island and in neighbouring vicinities,
because at the altitude the cultivation of corn is not supposed
to be possible. However the corn grows thanks to the thermal
regulation effect of the lake. Textiles activity is similar
to that of Taquile in both type and design. Craftwork from
straw is also made here, such as baskets, rope and receptacles
for diverse uses.

Suasi
Suasi covers 43 hectares and lies 75km from
the port of Puno. Access is via lake transport, and it is
necessary to cross the entire width of the lake in a northern
direction. The island has abundant vegetation and its own
microclimate. It lies close to Soto island, a Titicaca nature
reserve.

Soto
Soto sits South of Suasi and has the highest
peak in the area. It is also marks the deepest point of the
lake, around 280m deep just off the island's shores. Because
of its nature life and its works dedicated to the Pachamama
(Mother Earth) it is a natural sanctuary ideal for the practice
of ceremonies and rites. |
