Sillustani
An excursion of 3+ hours, it is usually
organized for the afternoons (from 2pm) to fully appreciate
the "chullpas", or burial towers, which are
circular stone buildings and magnificent examples of
local pre-Colombian architecture. The Chullpas (stone
tower-like structures) await sunrises on special days
such as equinoxes and solstices that bring forward the
spirits of the political and spiritual leaders of old.
An ideal place to get in touch with
nature and the mystic element of the Peruvian Altiplano
(high plains). We recommend a private visit for specific
activities, such as meditiations at specific times,
visits to the Umayo island and appreciation of the local
biodiversity with vicuña and local bird species. |

The
Uros Islands
An ancient race that still inhabits artificial
totora reed islands built more than 40 years ago. Today the
Uros welcomes guests from all over the world. Originally the
Uros did not welcome foreigners, being a timid people with
little contact even with communities living on the shores
of Lake Titicaca. At that time is was necessary to enter the
totora reeds with presents such as coca leaves, bread and
other gifts before being accepted onto the islands. As time
has passed, the islands originally some 1½ hours by
boat from the city of Puno have been located closer to the
city because the Uros people wished to have more contact with
the city, this policy beginning after the floods of 1986.
It is possible to visit the islands at any
time of day. Nowadays many of the islanders are empresarios
in lake transport and offer tours to their islands.

Luqina, Uros, Puno
Other traditional 1 day Uros/Taquile tours
are sometimes saturated by constant morning visitors en route
to the islands of Taquile, Amantan and Suasi.
However, we first visit Taquile and then
the Aymara sector of Luquina, where on the lakeshore we offer
a typical lunch in a rural restaurant built specifically for
our purposes. This allow us to visit the Uros islands in the
afternoon, time of little tourism on the floating islands
and away from the winds of the main lake that sometimes rise
from 4pm.
The trip starts at Puno, and we go direct
to Taquile, where after a 3 hour island visit we lunch at
Luquina (on the Chucuito peninsula), and then finally to the
Uros islands while all other tourists have done the round
in reverse, this allows us to be virtually alone at the attractions
and to visit other sites where no other tourist goes.

TOUR. Uros - Amantani - Taquile - Puno For
those who wish to enjoy an overnight stay at the island of
